When Sunday Comes

Which it has to England, I realize. Over there Villa fans are waking up and realizing that it’s Derby Day, and humming a bit of “My Old Man” as they put the kettle on.
But over in the PST, we’ve still got three hours of Saturday to go. And so I sit, pondering the significance of tomorrow. It’s not just that it’s a match against our hated rivals. It’s that, just like Saturday’s fixtures, tomorrow’s matches can shuffle the table once again. Continue Reading When Sunday Comes…
What a Boring Weekend

Halfway through and it’s fairly clear that this weekend is one of the most important in the Premier League season. Going into this weekend, the only thing certain is that Portsmouth were being relegated. In contrast to previous seasons, we are 2-3 games away from the end of the season and nothing else has been decided. We don’t know who will win the title, we don’t know who will take fourth, we don’t know who will be in Europe and we don’t know who goes down. Every game this weekend, with the possible exception of Everton v Fulham, has the ability to draw non-fans into the match, cheering for the result most beneficial to their side. 100 Meters to Holte
April 19, 2010 at 15:59 | Posted in Football is Sexy | Leave a commentSo Brad Friedel wrote a book. With Malcolm McClean, but you can certainly tell that this wasn’t a ghostwritten football autobiography; this was actually Brad forming some sentences. However, I’m confident in saying it was better written than, say, The Da Vinci Code, and so I thought I’d give it a quick review here.
Thinking Outside the Box: My Journey In Search of the Beautiful Game
Brad Friedel has started every Premier League match this season, yet he doesn’t get a lot of attention. Criticism, certainly, as it’s far easier to pick up his mistakes than his often-flawless saves. But as a couple of Cup mistakes by Brad 2.0 showed, we are quite lucky to have Brad 1 in our corner. Or box, if you will. And what much of the book focuses on is how hard he had to work to get to a top side.
Admittedly, there are not a lot of surprises in Friedel’s book, even to someone who’s been paying attention to football for less than two years. In fact, Brad and I became Villans around the same time. There are some interesting insights to the politics behind the game, particularly with regards to work permits in England. Friedel also exalts some players that fans love to hate, and gives perspective on competing for a starting keeper position.
Overall, though, the book is less about football than about a genuinely decent individual with an excellent work ethic–a small-town boy done good, a hero for Americans. Friedel follows a stringent diet, doesn’t drink or do drugs, and doesn’t chase women. In that respect, he’s quite unusual among footballers. Much of the money he’s earned off salary and sponsorship deals is put toward his football academy, Premier Soccer Academies. This is the type of book you give to a strong footballer who is entering high school or heading off to college, hoping they’ll be struck by a bit of inspiration. While at some points in the book I just wanted him to tell a revealing story or give us some juicy dirt on a teammate, Friedel clearly has a strong moral code, and in the end it made me appreciate his presence in Villa’s goal even more.
Delph Injury: Ruptured ACL

This isn’t good news. Delph will be out until the middle of next season, and it will be impossible to know how well he has recovered until then. I’m in no way an expert on sports injuries, but I’d say that it’s likely Delph makes a full recovery and only suffers a delay in his development. But there’s no way of knowing for sure, and until I see him back and healthy and just as dynamic as he was before, I’ll be nervous.
A Quick Post About Nathan Delfouneso

I haven’t seen a lot of Nathan Delfouneso (not nearly as much as I’d like) but I have been incredibly impressed with his ability in the times he’s been on the pitch. He’s obviously incredibly gifted athletically; pace, innate skill, good instincts; I think everyone is excited to see what he can do. But my real reasons for excitement are significantly less glamorous. Continue Reading A Quick Post About Nathan Delfouneso…
And Now for a Bringdown
April 18, 2010 at 14:22 | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a commentTags: Fabian Delph
According to the team’s website, Fabian Delph suffered a serious knee injury in training on Saturday and had to be stretchered off. Link.
This is obviously scary news, as Fabian Delph must be considered a major part of the team’s future. Knee injuries are scary in any sport, but when you’re talking about a midfielder who counts speeds as one of his biggest assets, the concern must be magnified.
This is something to keep a very close eye on. One of the biggest reasons to be excited about Villa’s future are the young players that have yet to make a major impact on the first team, and Delph is a huge part of that. That’s not to say anyone should panic, but everyone should certainly hope that this turns out to be less severe than it sounds.
Portsmouth 1 Aston Villa 2 – Recap

Recaps are something I’ve wanted to do for a bit and for reasons that will soon become clear we’ll be doing them much more frequently going forward. Here is the first one!
Well that was a bit more nerve-wracking than expected. I don’t think it is unfair to say that Villa leaving without anything less than all three would have been a massive disappointment; a team of Villa’s caliber must be expected to defeat a team of Pompey’s no matter the venue. That Portsmouth managed to defeat Spurs (that Portsmouth managed to defeat anyone) to book a ticket to Wembley for the FA Cup final is nothing short of an act of God. I have a lot of affection for Pompey and their fans are some of the best in England (if not the world) but at the risk of stating the obvious they are not at all a good side. Some Thoughts on Tomorrow

It feels very odd saying that I am not at all nervous for tomorrow. Generally around this time pre-matchday I start getting a bit antsy, and when playing an opponent of Chelsea’s caliber that goes it’s only amplified. This time though? Nothing, at least in the way of nerves.

Sorry we’ve gone quiet—we’re working on transferring the blog to a different platform, so look for exciting changes coming soon!
But first, Aston Villa have some excitement of their own. Saturday they hit the pitch at Wembley for the second time this season (sadly enough, I won’t be there for this match). And as we all know, in this semi-final tie we must face Chelsea once more. With the disastrous meeting at Stamford Bridge a fortnight ago, The Blues wiped from our memories October’s 2-1 victory and left us confused, angry and shaken. In the aftermath, many of us realized that March’s final game was an anomaly, an unraveling of a young team that had been trying to hold it together for too long and had a bit of a mental breakdown. Unfortunately, others, including media outlets, took the week after the Chelsea fiasco to spread rumours about our manager, our owner and one of our stars. During that time, we took a break from writing, not wanting to give any credence to the ridiculous gossip. Continue Reading Semifinal Serenity…
